I have a couple of rods that have swivel tips, but they don't have any kind of ceramic inserts. I was wondering if that's how these tips were produced since I have a matching pair. I was also wondering of the pros and cons of using them with wire or mono. Re: Trying To Find Out About A Swivel Tip

Usually the long arm extending from the roller portion had a carbide insert or at least a hard chrome ring. Because the arm was free to move, it didn't carry much load and friction was minimal. The roller was still doing the bulk of the work.

Do a search for Torpedo Tip, it is produced by the Torpedo Wire company. It is designed just for wireline applications. It has a tiny guide right before the roller to keep the wire on the roller. It also has the extended arm with an SIC insert. The whole tip swivels about 45 degrees each way. I use these exclusively on all of my wire rods for Great Lakes Salmon. To answer your question, I don't think you will find any issues because of exactly what Tom said. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/16/2016 08:39AM by Tony Childs. Yeah I'm trying to figure out if these are okay to use since they both don't have any kind of insert Re: Trying To Find Out About A Swivel Tip

The only thing I would worry about is whether the bearing surface will be too thin and make the wire curl? The rings add a little radius. Wire curls like ribbon pulled across scissors if the angle towards the load becomes too sharp. Re: Trying To Find Out About A Swivel Tip

The arm floats - you can't put much pressure on it at all.
