Looking to build my first fly rod and looking for some expert advise. The following is what I'm looking for. Any "helpful" suggestions and/or advice is ALWAYS appreciated.

Lightweight blank
4-piece blank
Graphite blank


10 foot 4 wt............Fishing Stillwater midges

10 foot 5wt............Fishing Stillwater midges

9 foot 6wt...............Fishing stillwater WF / Sinking Lines - stillwater midges and small streamers (Eastern Sierra's)

9 foot 7wt.................Fishing Surf & Saltwater Bays in Southern California

It's all about the fishing you plan to do.
Species and size of the flies.

Let us know and we'll point you in the right direction.

Eric is correct. Your choices are all over the place - from big fresh water with the 4wt to light saltwater with the 7wt.

Placement of the first guide should consider the reach of the fisherman so he/she will easily pick up the line.

For salt rods I don't use a keeper, don't want anything that the line could snag on. Use the first guide frame for a keeper. Things happen very fast with salt water fish.

It's not 9', and it is not inexpensive, but if you building up a portfolio of rods, a Tom Morgan Unity with the Universe 8 1/2' 2 or 4 piece 7 weight is wonderful.

Less expensive is either a TFO BVK or Pro II, both of which are available in 9' 7 weights.

And echoing the thoughts above, it would be helpful to know salt vs fresh water, species targeted, venues, and casting preference. Without that information we are shooting suggestions to you in the dark.

For a decent build, and still moderately priced, I would try one of the 9' 7wt SHX blanks from Karen at Bingham Ent. These SHX blanks are very highly underated

So am I now reading it right - you wish to build 4 fly rods per above parameters?

If you have not built a fly rod before - there is a lot to consider before you dedide on blanks.
You really should unhide your email to benefit from experienced advice.

A lot depends on the water you will fish, the fish you are targeting size an type, like Eric pointed out ,
lots of help out here for you , but you have to help fill in what they need

Another thing to take into consideration is your casting stroke... if you are an accomplished caster that likes a fast blank, someone who likes a moderate fast or a mid flex rod?

I'm a beginner caster looking for something lightweight to stillwater flyfish, as indicated above.
