Hi All,
Let me first say I know all Epoxy will yellow over time. I also searched the threads and read everything I could on yellowing epoxy topics. I was recently in Florida for a vacation and I stopped in a custom rod building shop to pick up a few things. I picked up a very popular brand of epoxy while there. I mentioned to the guy there that I was having a lot of issues building on white blanks because of the yellowing. He mentioned to me that they only use Aftcote for white blanks, (This is not the brand I bought while there). I personally had never heard of this brand. I searched and found that some of our sponsors carry this product. I can't think of a place anywhere else where sun exposure would be greater on fishing rods so I have to believe there is some merit in this product? What is the rod build community doing to address yellowing when building on white blanks? Surely some have figured this out by now? I am just tired of building a great looking rod and then have the edges of my wraps turn yellow after one summer of fishing. And this is in Canada so it's only a few months! Thank You, Chris Tulk Re: Epoxy Question

On white rods, I use Permagloss rather than epoxy. It won't yellow or amber, ever.
It does give a slight different look than epoxy, however. ................. Re: Epoxy Question

Hi Tom,
How many coats do you have to apply to the wraps? Have you posted any pictures of the wraps? Re: Epoxy Question

About 3 is sufficient. If you want a lot of depth, similar to epoxy, then you'd be looking at 5 to 8 coats. But the end result will be more of an eggshell finishing, not a thick smooth type look.

Oh, not sure I want a egg shell look. I don't have PG but I may have to buy some. If I apply it on the blank in the butt section can it be removed before I install the butt? I would like to try a wrap and see what it will look like. Re: Epoxy Question

It can be removed but be advised that it dries much harder than any epoxy (although is more flexible).

Just wrap it in the grip area and see what it looks like. Then put the grip right over it , no need to remove it. You will find plenty of test wraps under my grips. The weight in that area will not be noticeable . Freddwhy (Rapt-Ryte) Re: Epoxy Question

I just came across this stuff. Somebody that knows more about epoxy than me should look at this product and see if it is applicabe to rod building. Their FAQ's say it is waterproof. Flexible and crack resistant. They say you can coat custom fishing lures with it. Re: Epoxy Question

It is no better nor worse than what is currently offered as epoxy thread finish. And, it will turn yellow eventually.
