I have an American Tackle Power Wrapper with a Pac Bay Deluxe Chuck that I have used for 4-5 years. I only build 3-4 rods a years so it hasn't seen a lot of use.

(1) My first question is whether the drying motor is designed to turn in either direction, clockwise or counter clockwise? It seems to be the luck of the draw when I turn the drying motor on which direction it will turn.

(2) The last time I used the drying motor it made an annoying noise if it was rotating clockwise (turning away from me with the motor on my left). It sounds a little bit like a noisy bearing in the Chuck but I'm not sure where the noise originates. If I flip the switch on and off until it rotates in the opposite direction (counter clockwise, rotating toward me with the motor on my left) the noise goes away and it is so quiet you can't tell it is even turning. Is this normal? Should I be concerned about the noise it is making or which direction it turns when I turn it on?

I think they all make noises that are hard to identify. You will find that if you stop the drier motor fully with your finger, it will reverse direction. That is how they are designed. It's much easier than flipping the switch until you get the direction you want. I would use that motor until it breaks and then just replace it. They are cheap and easy to install.

Mine have always made a little noise and so do the same type of motors on my dryers. Is normal.

If you want to keep it running same direction manually rotate it that way as you flip power switch on and it will go which ever direction you start it.

These small motors are called timing motors. They run equally well in both directions as you have found out. They start in the direction that the inner motor poles happened to be lined up at the time of applying electricity to the motor.


As Steve clearly stated, if you want the motor to turn a particular direction, just put turning pressure on your rod in the direction that you want the rod to turn, before and as you flip the power switch. It will always start and continue to run in that direction if you do that simple task.

The motors are inexpensive and easy to replace. If you are concerned, obtain a new motor, and replace it when needed.

The new price is about $15 and the surplus price for these motors is about 50 cents.
