DOA for my rod?

Can a repair be made to this rod section? If so, it doesn’t have to be pretty-just serviceable for occasional use.
It’s a 4 piece 9ft, 6wt Elkhorn and the fracture is just above the first ferrule (tip over butt)-about 23 or 24 inches above my grip. The break is 3/16” wide and 1.5” long. However there also longitudinal cracks either side of the major fracture that I can feel and see that are 2.5” long. In the picture, I opened the fracture with a tooth pick (I uploaded photo in Miscellaneous section). In the photo, I can see the evidence of the unopened crack below the fracture. I was thinking to double wrap the troubled area and epoxy. Hopefully members have attempted something like this or have an opinion more experienced than mine. Thanks. Re: DOA for my rod?

Please register with the same name you use here or your photos won't "stick" on the photo page.
Try uploading again. Most anything can be fixed but we'll need to see it before making an educated guess. ................. Re: DOA for my rod?

Just wrapping over it isn't going to work. You will need to reinforce it with either an inner or outer sleeve. There is an article in the online library here that covers most common rod breakage and how to fix them. Re: DOA for my rod?

The cracks are most likely even longer then what you can see and feel. With a break that long, I would attempt to get a replacement section from Elkhorn. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/01/2016 08:03PM by Phil Erickson. Re: DOA for my rod?

I would glue on about a 5 inch long tight fitting oversleeve and overwrap the ends of the over sleeve for 1/2 inch on each end to insure that the oversleeve will not split.
The oversleeve will stiffen the rod in this area, but since the problem is fairly close to the butt of the rod, the flex reduction will be minimal. Be safe Re: DOA for my rod?

By the way, if you do do the oversleeve, the best way to do it would be to remove the guides from that section of the rod. Then, slide the oversleeve down the tapered rod and have the entire sleeve get nice and tight right in the break area. Glue it in place, overwrap the ends of the over sleeve, tie the guides back on the rod, coat the guides and oversleeve wrap and go fishing.

Have you contacted Elkhorn? They have always been good about replacements. Re: DOA for my rod?

I think my second attempt uploading photo was successful. Re: DOA for my rod?

It won't be successful until you register on the photo page with the same name you have here.
