how to get matte finish ?

hi,
i have about a 7'' long section in front of my reel seat, that has two decals end to end.
i just can't get a epoxy finish over these that i'm happy with, after 4 tries.
i just block sanded it smooth again, and i sorta like the matte finish i now how over the decals,
or maybe i can just live with it, since i have no luck with the epoxy.

*can i just leave it like this, or is there a way to get even a better matte finish to this area ?
*or is there a thin varnish, poly, ect... i can brush over this area, instead of using epoxy ?

thx guys,

You can use the equivalent of corn starch to mix with the finish and give you a matt finish.

Basically, if you look at a new can of flat - varnish - you will find a layer of matting agent lying in the bottom of the can. So, if you do not mix up the can - before starting your job, you will end up with gloss finish varnish rather than matt finish varnish.

Different finishing companies use different materials for the material to cause the finish to go flat, so you could experiment with a few different materials to see what material works best to get the matt finish that you want to achieve.

David

If you have not totally giver up on epoxy, search YouTube for the Doc Ski videos. As I remember it, Doc demonstrates over two videos how he finishes long wraps. The difficulty of achieving the nearly perfectly flat finish does seem to increase with the length of the wrap or area to be finished. But it can be done, and a picture (make that video) is word a thousand words.
