I see a number of people are using this tool. [rodbuilding.org]
What are you using for a tail stock. As a complete newbie to this on advice in a previous post I got a chuck for the tailstock, but when I got the lathe and the chuck, there is no way to replace the current live center with the chuck without manufacturing a part. I want to build my handles on a steel rod (if find the threaded rods I use to glue up on) are not straight enough, put this between the two chucks and go. How have people solved this? jontobey@yahoo.com www.gointothelight.wordpress.com Re: Grizzly Hobby Lathe

I use steel mandrels similar to these: the live center fits the 60 taper.

Jon,
Use a mandrel or threaded rod that has a 60 degree tapered center hole so that the end of the mandrel will rest on the point of the tail stock. Remove the Grizzly head stock point and simply insert the mandrel into the chuck of the variable speed drill. This setup will work very well. Be safe Re: Grizzly Hobby Lathe

John, You put the mandrel into the drill chuck. The Grizzly Hobby Lathe uses an electric drill for the motor. The Grizzly stock point holds the other end of the mandrel with the 60 degree tapered center. I use mine a lot. Re: Grizzly Hobby Lathe

Ron explained it well.
When you look at the picture of the Grizzly lathe in the picture, you see a double point that is normally inserted into a piece of work that is being turned. The double point is inserted into the variable speed drill for turning the work piece. But, when turning a grip on this lathe - the double point that normally is inserted into the work piece, is removed from the drill and the mandrel replaces the double point. As Ron said, then the mandrel with its 60 degree centered hole on the tail stock end is turned with the drill and the opposite end is supported with the tail stock point. Take care Re: Grizzly Hobby Lathe

Bob's right the mandrel looks like the one's I made at Backlash Tools. I don't think Andy Dear made any mandrels with the 1 inch cut shoulder.
Barry, look on the end where the 1 inch cut shoulder is and see if there's a '' B '' stamp in the end. Lynn Williams Re: Grizzly Hobby Lathe

Okay, so the chuck I bought (which cost more than the lathe) is useless, and I still need to manufacture a mandrel to turn a handle.
Shouldn't be this hard! I looked at the Backlash Mandrels, they are 14", but I went this route to be able to turn Spey handles. Re: Grizzly Hobby Lathe

Get Drill rod Largest you can use and get a Local Machine shop to mill the 60 deg cup in the end and the slight shoulder on the chuck end.
if you are using Cork carefully shape it in two pieces and glue up on blank Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/05/2016 08:06PM by Barry Thomas Sr. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
