Odd Request

Had a gentleman come to me to build him a rod from a kit he had gotten for a gift . Had gotten the rod almost completed ,except for putting the epoxy on the thread . I had already put color preserver on the thread . The gentleman came back to see how I was coming along with the rod .I told him I only had to put the epoxy on the thread and it would be finished . He said that he liked the way things looked without the epoxy . just to put a couple more coats of color preserver on and leave it at that .. Will this hold up without the epoxy ??

You might advise him to let you put a coat of urethane on the wraps. That would protect them for a very long time and wouldn't change the look by much.

Certainly not long term, and certainly not as stable as with epoxy on the guide wraps.

Be safe

Thank you Tom . I will do just that . By any chance would you have a certain brand of urethane in mind ?

Any exterior gloss furniture or floor urethane will work for this.

That would be just as good, if not better.

I agree with Tom and Gary, a sealing coat of lumiseal or permagloss would lock in the guides and thread, and not change the look of the rod much.

Strangely enough, I've had the same request two times before. I did exactly what Tom suggested. The customer was happy and the rods are still in good shape.
