I have only built a few rods and this web site has been invaluable to a newbie like me, thank you! I have a question about Rod Bond, does it have a shelf life? I have some that I used about 18 months to 2 years ago. Both parts still "look" OK, but when I mixed a test batch the resin seemed extra thick. It also seemed that it took a long time to harden ( I realize when it hardens it is still flexible) and even after a day or so it was still a little tacky and very flexible. Will heating the resin help or should I just break down and get on-line and order some more?
Thanks! Re: Rod Bond Shelf Life

Shelf life isn't a problem. Temperature could be. Some warm the epoxy by putting the containers in warm water or very brief bursts in a microwave. All before mixing. Re: Rod Bond Shelf Life

It's fine. Epoxy resins are sensitive to temperature. If it has any "chunks" or hard particles in it just set it in a pan of very hot water for a few minutes or remove the lid and hit it with the microwave for a few seconds. Repeat as necessary.

The rod bond resin does have a tendency to crystalize making it stiff and grainy, but this does not hurt its performance. I just take out what I need mix it with the hardener and warm up the mix with a hair dryer, but do not over do it. This will smooth out the consistency and make mixing easier. Rod bond is a slow cure epoxy and thus takes many hours for it to setup. I usually let it cure over night before use. The warmer it is the faster it will setup. Re: Rod Bond Shelf Life

With a very hot water bath, then 10 seconds in the microwave the Rod Bond was as good as new. Thanks everyone....mission accomplished! Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
