Just wrap the female ferrual at least 2 x the size of the female opening Tight This will help to make sure you don't split the opening Other then that keep clean Bill - willierods.com Re: Proper treatment of two piece rod connections

I have a Finwick spinning rod with the female ferrule wrapped like your recommendation however the male end looks like it has a plug in it?
Thanks for the help! Re: Proper treatment of two piece rod connections

Many blanks today have a plug (flush with the end) in them. It keeps foreign matter out of the blank. It has little effect on the strength of the ferrule. Re: Proper treatment of two piece rod connections

It also tends to keep that open end from splitting or cracking in on itself.

If the smaller end of the blank does not have a plug, I make one. I just use a piece of solid fiberglass material and cut off a piece about 4 inches long. Then, I chuck the piece into a variable speed drill and hold the spinning drill piece against the running belt sander. I sand down the piece until the sanded part of the piece just fits inside the open end of the blank.
Then, I use 5 minute epoxy to glue the plug into the hole. Since about 1/2 of the length is larger than the blank, the larger part of the piece makes a nice handle to hold the piece when gluing. Then, when dry, I just use the abrasive cut off wheel to cut the plug flush with the end of the blank. If the plug is not black, I just use magic marker to color the end of the plug. I just mix a little of one of the past glues and pack it into the tip Then wipe it off with a paper towel so there is none over the end so the female fits well Bill - willierods.com Re: Proper treatment of two piece rod connections

Ferrule design and construction has come a long ways from years ago, but we still tend to treat ferrules as if hey were a weak link in a rod. In talking with designers and engineers at shows wraps to prevent splitting are no longer needed.
However, most still recommend a narrow wrap close to the end of the female ferrule (with finish to the edge) as a protective measure to prevent catching the lip of the female edge and lifting finish or fiber. The exposed edge is the weak spot and can still be damaged by mishandling. Re: Proper treatment of two piece rod connections

I would put a wrap just to be on the SAFE side Bill - willierods.com Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
