I had to show this one off...

I just finished this one up last week. Here's a link to the imgur.com gallery: [imgur.com] And a link to my Rodbuilding.org gallery as well: [www.rodbuilding.org]

Nickle silver REC reel seat with buckeye burl insert. Recoil snake guides, stripper guide, and tip top. Custom designed and turned cork grip with checkerboard inlays, and a mayfly burn. There is also a custom mayfly weave on the butt section. All thread wraps are black NCP, with green metallic trim.

Let me know what you guys think!

Dave, nice looking rod. That mayfly weave and imprint on the cork look very classy. How did you get the image on the grip? With a laser or woodburning tool? It doesn't look like it is "burned" deep into the cork.

Thanks guys!

Jared, the mayfly on the grip was done with a wood burning pen. I did it fairly light so it was a bit more subtle.

Thank you, Dave. That very subtle burn looks fantastic! I got my woodburning pen out a couple weeks ago when my youngest son (who is 4) wanted a "Batman" themed rod. I burned the Batman symbol on one side of the cork and the old school "Batman" written in the cape ala Adam West. I used to burn a lot of wood 15-20 years ago and thought "why not cork". Definitely need some more practice to even approach what you did. But it gives me hope. Ha ha

I can't draw a straight line to save my life, and the woodburner is even harder for me. I use graphite transfer paper to get the outline on the grip, and then do the burn. It's much easier for me!

you do great work, I want to add a comment that might help on the long run I have had very poor results when using the the cork you put on the very end of your grips, stay with regular cork rings or the rubber ones , they will hold up a lot better over time, the burnt l cork don't hold up as a wear ends , in the grips they are great but not on the ends
that is what I found out the hard way it just started to chip off then I had to replace it , what a mess

Thank you William!

I had no idea that burled cork chipped so easily! Now I'm nervous, I've been putting burled cork on the ends for a while now... Hopefully I don't get too many back... Thanks for the heads up!
