Used Guides - worth keeping?

Just looking for general opinion here. A couple years ago I bought out someone that was getting out of rod building - got a ton of Gudebrod thread and a bunch of guides, other components and a power wrapper. A lot of the guides are used in a range of conditions from new to questionable. I am of the mindset that if I am going to invest the time and $ of a good blank and other components I am not going to slap on a used guide. Other than saving them for repairs - which I have not had a need in the 5 years I have had them - is there any reason to hang onto these things? Trying to de-clutter, but don't want to end up kicking myself for throwing away something I end up needing.
Thanks Re: Used Guides - worth keeping?

I wouldn't bother keeping them. However... odds are that one week after you toss them out, you'll need them. Just the nature of the beast I'm afraid.

Worth keeping. I will use "gently" used components to build rods for fellow disabled military veterans. That's just me though. Re: Used Guides - worth keeping?

I used to keep them, but found that I never ever used them, simply because many of the new, much lighter guides are relatively inexpensive and I really don't want to be putting the older type guides on any rod that I touch.
Of course, your choice. In that same vein, with respect to house keeping: I generally like to do a run through of things that I own about every 6 months on a rotating basis. I use a keep or pitch decision on the following: IF I haven't used an item in the last 6 months and can't see a use for it in the next 6 months, the item is in the pile for potential throwing. Then, I ask the question, do I need it for a special need down the road or for sentimental reasons. If I answer no to both of these questions, I generally make the hard decision to pitch the item. Guides are in a bit of a different category since they are part of business inventory and it may be impossible for forecast long term future needs. But, they are still potential candidates. I do from time to time go through stock and if I find stock that is of a very old age (vintage) and they are really heavy or similar - I will likely pitch them simply because I would not want to ever put them on any rod. If a person came to me with an older rod that had guides of this sort - with a request to replace two or three missing guides, I would simply indicated that I would not replace the missing guides with matching guides, but would only replace the full guide set with newer style physically lighter guides. Just a business choice that I have made. Good luck Re: Used Guides - worth keeping?

Shawn, I'll make a deal with you, the next time I sweep the floor of my shop I'll send you all the used epoxy I strip from repairs, and you send me those used guides. If you think you can't use those guides, try using that epoxy!
On a serious note, If you really want to get rid of them do as Bill stated and list them in Buy and Sell. Someone would be willing to take them off your hands. Dennis J. Danku (Sayreville,NJ) Edited 3 time(s). Last edit at 07/09/2015 09:00PM by Dennis Danku. Re: Used Guides - worth keeping?
