Looking for some help. I'm fairly new to rod building and just purchased the Renzetti Craftsman Rod lathe. Is it possible to install a DPDT switch to reverse the motor? I have the solid state foot pedal with it as well.

I may be wrong but i think that you can only reverse a DC motor using that switch. Do not know what kind of motor comes with your Renzetti.

Simply put, unless you rewire the motor, you can't reverse the motor.

An AC/DC motor does not typically like to be reversed very well due to the alignment of the brushes with respect to the armature.

However, a DC gear motor works very well with the appropriate power supply and it is easy to reverse a DC motor by simply swapping the voltage to the motor's power leads.

Thanks so much, Roger. Do you know of a DC motor that will mount to the Renzetti motor mount? I'm wanting to apply rod finish on the lathe and would like to have the ability to have the rod turn in the opposite direction. Thanks again for you time.

Has anyone ever heard of a wrapping motor that is able to reverse direction?
I'm not sure this can be accomplished using an ac powered motor.
I asked this question of an "expert" at Mudhole, and his answer was, "why would you want to do that?"
There are several reasons I would want to do that, the most important being undoing a misapplied wrap, using the direction change to remove a sacrificial thread from a tiger wrap, etc. etc.
There are probably more reasons, but they escape my brain at this moment.

For applications like removing the sacrificial thread or a bad wrap, one solution is to take the belt off of one of the pulleys and allow the rod to turn freely. Another option, if you want to power the motor and run it backwards is to put a figure 8 in the belt.

figure 8 works great but eats the belt a little faster that normal

I did this to my homemade wrapper that I now use only for turning grips. But I mounted a DC motor on it. I had to wire a rectifier to convert from AC to DC and then the cross over switch to reverse directions.

By the way, that is one of the exact reasons why I reverse my wrapping motor. i.e. I wrap in one direction, but reverse the rod to apply finish and or to correct a mistake.

Exactly. I am fairly new at this and have only built a couple of rods. I sold my other wrapper to my brother and upgraded to the Renzetti. I just wish it could run in both directions. I've applied finish at higher speeds and feel I have more control. Especially at the end of the wraps. I still can't believe seasoned rod builders ask the question "Why would you want to?" :)
