Custom request for rod build.
(I’m looking for a 5’ spinning rod to jig Tog. The action will need to be pretty stiff. Not deep sea stiff but prob. medium heavy action or heavy. I’m into St Croix rods. If you have any suggestions I’m open. Looking forward to hearing from you. I contacted St Croix this is their suggestion.) (Ed, guessing he wants to drop some heavy metal in deeper water, unfortunately I don’t really have a 5’ that’s real stiff. If it was me I’d either go with a 2S60MHF and trim a foot off the butt or a 2SW66MHF and trim a foot and a half off the butt. 2S for the <2oz weights and 2SW for >2 oz weights. If he’s jigging 6 oz + I’d go with a 2M70MHF and trim it down.) So I have a couple of question when cutting blanks. I have cut small amounts off rods, but cutting a foot or more is different. What happens to the spline and guide placement when cutting this much on a blank? Build your dreams and dream what your going to build. Re: Blank cut down question

ED,
Really no different than the full length rod. Put the grip and reel seat on the rod. See where the rod bends and put just enough guides on the rod so that when all of the blank is loaded, the line follows the contour of the loaded blank. It sounds like you have a good plan. Chop and build and I expect that it will work out well for you. As has been said many times before on this forum. Don't worry about the spine, and just build on the straightest axis on the blank. Good luck Re: Blank cut down question

Thank you Roger
I almost was going to place a disregard on this thread after I posted it because I am thinking what you just said. But it is always good to here someone else say the same thing. So thank you again. Great forum. I wished I had found this forum years ago. I am not stupid with computers and belong to other forums related to hobbies. Never thought about a rod building forum. Go figure. Why don't you check out a 30 or 50 pound regulation trolling rod blank? would that work for you? Re: Blank cut down question

The one you mention, is it a St Croix rod? The ones mentioned above in post was suggested by St Croix. I am not too familiar with St Croix rods. But the customer only wants a St Croix. This is the problem or I would have a lot more options. Re: Blank cut down question

I am not that familiar with St Croix blanks, but if they are like many other mfg's. they may have regulation trolling blanks in the 5-5.5 foot range designed for use with detachable aluminum butts. Check out their catalog and see. That way you don't have to worry about not having the blank warranted.. Re: Blank cut down question
