nailed reel seat

While restoring an old rod with a wooden handle and foregrip I noticed the reel seat is loose. While attempting to remove it to re-epoxy I found the reel seat is nailed on. One nail in the handle and one in the foregrip. Of course the nails are small however they are rusty. I am not sure if I want to replace the nails (and use epoxy) or replace the reel seat altogether. Could this be original? Has anyone ever encountered this?

Yup, very common for that era rod. Once you get it apart you might see a glob of glue that looks like maple syrup covering a winding of mason cord to fill in as an arbor for the reel seat. Dennis J. Danku (Sayreville,NJ) Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
