Refreshing (afraid to say restoring) an old fiberglass boat rod. Stripped everything off of it. Sanded and now ready for urethane (as I learned from an earlier thread). My question is can I put on a coat of urethane prior to wrapping the guides like I have been doing on bamboo rods or should I wrap the guides then urethane? If I urethane first do I use epoxy on the wraps or more urethane? Thanks for the help. David A. Gaestel Re: urethane on old fiberglass rod

I'm definitely no pro but I have recently stripped 10 old rods of my own like this:
1. Strip and sand up to 1200 grit wet/dry. 2. Apply adhesion promoter as instruction 3. Painted with Createx primer with air brush 4. 2 coats of Createx wicked colors 5. 2 coats of Spraymax 2K urethane Then I built the rod blank from there like I had purchased it new. I just used Prokote hi build epoxy over the urethane and it was fine. They all turned out very nice! Jon Hood Re: urethane on old fiberglass rod

Urethane 1st, 1 coat let dry, Urethane again, if you didn't get full coverage the 1st time. After that you may coat the wraps with either one. I use epoxy. Lynn Re: urethane on old fiberglass rod

Thank you Jon and Lynn. On the rod that prompted me to post here I used Lynn's method and it is turning out perfect. This rod appears to be green in color throughout. The urethane is providing the deep wet look I wanted. On another I have started down the path Jon described since this rod was paint over a clear (yellowish) fiberglass blank.
