here's what I'm thinking as far as guides for this rod. those of you with experience, double check it and offer opinions/options.
rod is a 13' 6-10 lb using a 4 1/2" center pin reel
here is what I'm thinking for guide set up.
Fuji y series 20,16,12,10,8
Fuji L series size 8 for the rest

thoughts/ideas. other recommendations?
Thanks

Gary,

Just a couple general comments. It seems like you are using a lot of guides to get to your runner, you could probably save some weight with a quicker reduction by skipping the 16 and 10. I'd also be inclined to try a smaller runner like a 7 unless you need the terminal rigging clearance of an 8- again to reduce the guide train weight.

Are you trying to achieve a certain balance point with the build? If so, that would influence guide weight and thereby size size and frame style.

Ive seen a few builders who specialize in center pin rods using the Fuji AT style for reduction followed by L for runners.

Thanks John, I was wondering if I was "over building" this. so what you are suggesting is 20,12 and then 7 or 8's the rest of the way.

I'd be inclined to start there and keep the runners as light as practical for the task and fishing conditions. Thats a long rod and runner weight will have a big effect on the feel of the rod.

I'd Suggest 20,16, 10 ( id order a 12 to and check the flow), then transition to #8's, the reason for 8's with steelhead is prevent ice build during the cold months.
I am not a fan though of regular 8 running guides, I do like Alps single foot flys for runners of Minima 4, I have used the Fuji single foot flys with success

I use 20, 12, 8, running guides, tip.
Depending on use I will use #6, #7 or #8 running guides and tip.
No need for all those extra intermediate guides.
I'm with Brian on the running guides as well. About 95% of the time I use single foot fly guides.
I have been making more and more rods with minnima guides to cut down one weight on the tip of the rod also.
As a bonus you can step down to a smaller guide and still get the size of a ceramic #8 in a minima #6 to drop even more weight and still have good winter performance.

Dave

So would you use the F series or the FX series of Minimas?

Mr. Marquardt,
The F series is available with the Minima ring. The FX series is a deep drawn frame and therefor only available in ceramic ring.

Mr. Boettcher,
Please enlighten those watching this string as to what other products have "problems". If you're again trying to infer that Minima 3 guides are somehow inherently flawed by design, I can assure you that our warranty data and sales volume data would show otherwise.
There have been thousands upon thousands of Minima 3 and 4 guides sold over the past 15+ years. The sheer number of guides in the field and their duration of use should be a testament the success of the product.
I don't expect you to change your mind Bill. I do however plan to provide accurate info, backed by data, to the rest of the rod builders using this forum.

Question from a novice builder: I have wrapped a few fly rods with my 12 year old son, but he is very interested in building his first centerline rod. He has selected a lamiglas (the closer) blank. I have a question about centering the guide placement for single foot angled guides. Does one draw a vertical line from the top of the guide ring to the blank as the appropriate centerpoint for guide to the blank as there is forward angulation. Also, we plan to use fuji l series 8 l running guides near the tip but for the lower guides, (8, 10, 12, 16 and 20) which series fuji guide would one use? Haven't ordered guides yet so would be open to alternatives if there are strong opinions. We plan to use a grip with sliding rings so balance will not be an issue.

Thank you in advance for all your help with a newb.

Mark
