I just completed a rod for a customer and in the process of turning the handle somehow a piece of sandpaper blew up into the blank and caused some light scuffs over a length of about 12". I told the customer and I am giving him a discount but would like to know what I can do to cover up the scuff marks as much as possible? If i take a wet finger and rub over the scuffs they disappear but they is very temporary. Thankfully the sandpaper that hit it was 500 grit so it didn't create any deep gaugers, just superficial surface marks. Any advice is very much apprecaited! How to correct it depends on the top coating of the blank. Is it paint? Clear coat? Bare?

you can try one of the wipe on polyurethanes..satin or gloss depending on the blank finish. just enough to wipe on and it may take care of the scratches..it is worth a try. I have done this in similar situations Re: Rod Build Oops...Need Advice - Scuffed Blank

Thanks Tom and John. It is a St. Croix SCIII blank. It has a painted finish on it they call Carbon Pearl.
John - does the poly leave any visible line where you rub it on? Re: Rod Build Oops...Need Advice - Scuffed Blank

You might try rubbing in a little furniture polish/wax. Nothing harsh, just something like Pledge or Behold. Old Gold is another good one for hiding scratches.

We have had luck with WD40, as long as the scuff is minor.
You might want to try that, but NOT near anything you want to wrap or put finish on! The spray will carry a ways and contaminate thread, etc. Best wishes, Ron Schneider Schneider's Rod Shop Mountain Home, Arkansas [www.schneidersrods.com] mtnron40@yahoo.com 870-424-3381 Re: Rod Build Oops...Need Advice - Scuffed Blank

If you wet your finger and they go away it is probably a clear coat on the blank
You can In Between guides and coat with permagloss mask off any thread Or cover the thread also While turning This is why I do handles Off The Rod Bill - willierods.com Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/04/2015 06:09PM by bill boettcher. Re: Rod Build Oops...Need Advice - Scuffed Blank

Hello,
I have had success using automotive clear coat safe rubbing compound to buff out surface scratches. It works as long as the scratch isn't too deep and only in the top gloss, or finish coat of the blank. I try to test in an inconspicuous area first, and if it looks ok, will apply a tiny bit rubbing compound over the scratched area and proceed to polish it using a mini buffing wheel (dremel attachment). The brand I use is called Meguiar's Ultimate Compound. -chad Re: Rod Build Oops...Need Advice - Scuffed Blank

A very fine rubbing compound and polish it by hand only, power tools for this are way too harsh

Well I had some old NeatsFoot Oil laying around and gave it a try. There is NO way that the customer will be able to tell me where the scuffs are (still getting a discount, guess I'm too honest). Thanks for all the advice everyone. Re: Rod Build Oops...Need Advice - Scuffed Blank
