Need help with steps to install abalone under guides. Would I just install abalone i/2" or so beyond the guide foot, place the guide on top of the abalone, and wrap the quide as usual? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Re: Abalone Under Guides

Edward,
Since you haven't got a reply yet, I'll try to help. Please understand that I have very little actual experience working with abalone. Having said that, I've seen examples of rods with abalone under guide feet, and other examples where the abalone was laid just between the guide feet. I don't think either way is right or wrong. My only thought is that extra material will equate to extra bulk and weight, and on a light supple rod this could be something you might want to avoid. On heavier rods, it probably doesn't matter much at all. You may be able to find some additional info here: [www.anglersenvy.com] I would also recommend you read this thread: [rodbuilding.org] Edited 1 time(s). Edward
My only concern is if the abalone is wrapped 360 degrees around the blank and for what ever reason the abalone is not properly bonded to the blank, there is a strong possibility that in time the abalone may break free and the guide will rotate on the blank. John Re: Abalone Under Guides
