Anyone have a source for some 1/4" turning mandrels?
I see Mud Hole has some, but they are longer than I'd like, and don't know how good they are. Thanks - Marc Keep it simple - that's all I can handle! Re: Turning Mandrels

You make some decent ones yourself (RodMaker had an article on how to do it). A simple 60 degree end mill bit and your own lathe is really all you need. You won't be able to create a shoulder in the chuck end without a machine lathe, but you can create something similar with a wrap of tape, if you're inclined to do so.
Machinist's drill rod is usually pretty straight. Although I have seen some use common home hardware store chromed steel rod and do okay. The key is to make the mandrel no longer than needed, or at least chuck it up so that only the portion you need extends beyond the chuck. ................. Re: Turning Mandrels

Hi Marc,
I use hardware store steel rods. Before I buy them, I roll them on the store floor to see if they are straight. I've used this type of rod for cork, birch bark, and wood. As Tom said, the biggest key with these is to cut them shorter, or use only a shorter part out of the chuck, to prevent the rod from bending or bowing. Take care, Chris Re: Turning Mandrels

We have an abundance of 10" long mandrels in sizes 3/8, 5/16, 7/16 and 1/2 " 1/4" are out of stock. For making split grips the shorter mandrel in my opinion works better than longer ones. Lance Re: Turning Mandrels

Thanks Lance,
Can I order them on the website? I may pick up a 5/16 and 3/8. Any longer ones? Thanks - Marc Keep it simple - that's all I can handle! Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
