I want to know if it's feasible to either sand down a blank tip that is a 7.5 , to make it fit a size 7 tip top guide. Or open up the tip top guide to make it work without sanding down the blanks tip .thanks Re: tip top guide , trying to make it work !!

Hi Peter,
I would not sand down a rod tip, myself. Faced with your situation, I would probably use a regular single foot micro as the tip. Take care, Chris Re: tip top guide , trying to make it work !!

You can expand the tube to fit. The tubes are brass and will stretch a half size no problem.
Use a fork and twist the tube onto a tine, rotating a bit at a time and testing on the rod tip as you go. Re: tip top guide , trying to make it work !!

This blanks is the " Big Nasty " a 9' heavy powered muskie rod , I am hoping that if I slice the tip top tube , I can open it up just enough to fit , then thread wrap it closed , the tip will have considerable pressure on it as the rod will be used for throwing big swimbaits up to 11 ounces . Peter,
For a rod like that, just get a silicon carbide tip top that will fit the tip of the blank perfectly. It is just fine if the tip top is larger than the rest of the guides. This guide takes about 90% of the wear and tear from the use of the thousand casts per musky. You do not want to skimp on either the size or the tube on this particular guide. By the way, it makes no sense to me at all to put micro or size 3 and 4 guides on a rod of this nature. Many folks will be running 80 lb braid on rods like this for musky fishing. Just better choices out there for guides. The weight of any guide set on a rod like this is insignificant compared to the rest of the rod and reel weight. By the way, it is very common for musky rods to have a much sturdier and heavier tip top than the rest of the guide set for the reason mentioned above. Good luck Re: tip top guide , trying to make it work !!

I can't imagine what advantage micro guides would have on a rod that stiff. The only real advantage of micro guides is their lack of weight compared to a set of standard guides, as weight dampens the recovery of lighter powered blanks. Re: tip top guide , trying to make it work !!

I like how Micro guides cast with a spiral wrap , I'll only go to maximum of 30# co-polymer line , Micro guides on this rod should be quite all right ! Re: tip top guide , trying to make it work !!

Peter,
Don't sand the tip! I know there is a 7.5 tip with a smaller ring...can't remember who makes it. There was a discussion here about the same issue not long ago. Someone mentioned a 7.5 tube with a size 4 or 5 ring being available. I'll see if I can find the post for you, I haven't had any luck yet. Roger and Tim, I put micros on musky rods all the time. They work on musky rods just the same as they do bass rods. My preference for guides are to use Fuji LDB's or the Am Tack HD micros. The size 4's work very well with 100lb braid. jeremy Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/08/2015 06:52PM by Jeremy Wagner. Re: tip top guide , trying to make it work !!

I had to go back 6 or 7 pages to find the discussion but I found it! At the time of the post, Ron said these were in stock- up to a 7.5 tube.

Try schneiderrods.com I had the same problem with microwave eyes with size 5 with tiptop 7.5. They sell the tip top 7.5 with a size 5 eye made by Batson. That is the smallest eye that I found for a 7.5 tip Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
