On many older wooden rods, there were guides on both sides of the rod so that the rod could be fished on one side for a few days, then on the other for a few days. This prevented the rod from taking a set. The tiptop was either a ring centered on the blank so the line would pass through on either side, or the top was held with a screw which when loosened would allow the top ring to be turned to the opposite side.
