I'm using fish hawk nylon core gold metallic A for the underwrap at which the ends will double as trim and for the overwrap, fish hawk black nylon D. The blank is matte black.
What is the best way to finish the wraps so I don't run into a problem. IE: fading, darkening, bubbles ,bleeding, Metallic staying packed, Cp or no cp etc, etc,. I would appreciate a sequence to follow from someone who routinely does this kind of wrap Thanks, Joe Re: Best way to finish this wrap

Did you want the Black overwrap to be transparent or semi transparent? Chris Richer Iroquois ON Re: Best way to finish this wrap

Neither- I want a true solid black. Re: Best way to finish this wrap

Black is generally black, CP or not. You do want to make sure that you pack the black threads together or else you'll have minute spaces that show through the gold underneath. Use of D over A will make this easier, or if using A over A you might want to put a coat of CP or light finish on the underwrap first, then overwrap with the black.

Thanks Tom,
That's about what I was thinking but better to hear it from one who knows. On the gold metallic under wrap , would you CP or light finish?? Joe Re: Best way to finish this wrap

On a lighter rod, I'd use CP. On a heavier rod where the additional weight won't matter as much, I'd use epoxy.

Question.....why a metallic under wrap, no advantages? Use black and the metallic only for the trim. Re: Best way to finish this wrap

A false underwrap, with metallic in the middle, is another option.

Again I would like to thank Tom for his reply.
I am not a rod builder by any stretch although I have built quite a few rods in the past for long distance casting and surf fishing. I have no equipment other than an old wooden hand rapper and a drying motor home made. I am a long distance surf fisherman and as such beautiful rods do not enter the picture. Rod action ,however does matter. I needed an under wrap because of the butt guide and ferrule location but not a full under wrap that would change the action of this blank that I'm totally familiar with so I opted for a short wrap beneath the guide feet that would serve a dual purpose(wrap and trim at the same time. I chose gold metallic under and black over with no under wrap in the middle, I never worked with metallic and that was the reason for my query. Thanks again to all Joe Re: Best way to finish this wrap
