Larry,
Any money spent on software programs or gizmos that will assist with the long and tedious process of creating weaving patterns is money well spent. Creating patterns the "old school" way can take in upwards of a week or more depending on the number of layers, size, and complexity of the completed weave and at times that can be longer and more difficult than actually wrapping the pattern! I personally, have and use, several software program available. This includes but not exclusive to, PC Stitch, Excell (yes Excell !), Visual Weave, and Pic-2-Weave. All have a learning curve to over-come and all have there advantages and disadvantages. My favorite program is completely "pattern" dependent. Meaning, some types of patterns are faster and easier to do using one type of program than the others or I at times, I will make make a pattern with the help of more than one program and not simply rely on what one program has come up with. See Larry, ALL of these things are just tools that HELP you create patterns. They can (sometimes) get pretty close to creating perfect patterns with just a few clicks, but for the most part, they all just help save time and effort and you still need to use your own experience and judgment to fine tune what they give you if you truly want to get the best completed weave. I truly recommend that any rod weaver should have at there disposal, as many of these types of tools as they can get there hands on. Each will "earn there keep". Ya know what I mean Vern? Visual Weave will serve you well and save you hours if not days on just one pattern not to mention many other patterns going forward. So, what is your time worth?
