This is my first attempt and fixing a broken blank. I have read the section in Tom's book and searched the internet.
The rod is broken about 10 Inches from the tip I measured the blank and it is 3.09 at the beak ( butt end) and I bought the smallest ferrule I could find. I have it glued together but my question is how to wrap it? From the blank to the lip of the ferrule seems like a large jump ( gap up) to wrap the ferrule. Should I of done something with the ferrule to reduce the radius? The fit is tight but I feel the wrap will look like it will bulge. Any help ? Re: How to use a ferrule

Not sure what you mean - did you install a metal ferrule on the rod 10 inches from the tip?

That was not the way to do a proper repair A metal ferrule will ad a lot of weight to the rod

I wouldn't have done that. A sleeve-over repair would have been the far better way to go. At this point you really don't need to do anything to the ferrule. More thread and epoxy will just add more weight, at a point on the rod where you really can't afford to have it.

After reading you past posts I have a question
Why or what made you use a metale ferrule Did some one tell you to use it Not trying to cut you down - But -- befor you do anything on a rod Come here and ask Seems you are having several problems and you may not be following instructions All builders start and work slow before they learn how to do certain things After learning you will get faster Also if you are ding some thing for the first time --- do it on a piece of scrap blank first Then when you get it right - then do the rod Bill - willierods.com Edited 1 time(s). David,
I just finished a repair on the tip of a rod last week. I used a tight fitting section of glass blank to be a perfect fit over the break. Then, I did a 1/4 inch wrap at each end of the oversleeve, coated the wraps with rod finish and had it ready to go. I suppose that the total repair took about 30 minutes. Good luck Re: How to use a ferrule

Bill,
This was an old rod of mine I was using to practice on. When do you use a metal ferrule and when do you use an oversleeve? Where do you find an oversleeve, from a scrap blank? Thanks guys... still learning Dave Re: How to use a ferrule

Normally a Ferrule is used to join multi piece rods.
An over sleeve is used to make a permanent repair on a broken rods. Yes, normally over sleeve's are found from pieces of old blanks. Since one normally likes to maintain the flex of a given rod, it is pretty common to use a "Fiberglass" overs sleeves since the fiberglass will generally be a bit more flexible than the similar graphite blank. I would say use metal ferrules on Bamboo rods only Some will differ Tradition
Especially on a tip section Too much weight Even then there are bamboo builders that are making them out of bamboo Bill - willierods.com Re: How to use a ferrule

From the library above:
[www.rodbuilding.org] Best to use glass as the article says, but I've used graphite with good success when I couldn't find the right piece of glass. The sleeve method is very effective, not that hard to do, and is pretty unobtrusive in appearance when done right. Don't get discouraged; every one of us on this forum has done stuff that we regret. But as stated above, when in doubt, ask here first and you'll avoid some of the mistakes we've made. Re: How to use a ferrule

There is a posting on the forum regarding where to get pieces to use for repairs. I think it is still on page one, but certainly in the first few. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
