Thread - Types to use?

Most of the thread type purchased at rod building suppliers seems to be of the "Nylon" type. My question is...... Can anyone give insight on using other types of thread for wrapping, such as a Polyester or Rayon thread? Quality vs. Durability? Or is it best to stay with a Nylon?

Nylon thread has been the commonly used thread succeeding Silk thread from an earlier era. When Gudebrod went out of business there was a need for for more three producers. Rod builders began using polyester thread which is available in many colors. The one down side is that polyester thread is primarily used for sewing machines and has a coating of silicone that reduces friction in sewing machines. As a result you need to use color preserver to prevent problems with epoxy and urethane finishes.

There are several companies now making nylon threads. These include Pac Bay, ProProducts thread, FishHawk, and Makoi. For polyester thread Sulky and Madeira.

Rayon thread should not be used for rod wrapping. It is too weak and tends to fuzz up. I hope this helps.

Awesome Mike! Thank you so much for that in-depth breakdown of the threads. Seriously clears up alot of confusion and fear I had from trying Polyester over the normal Nylon (ProWrap) I use.

Thanks again! Much appreciated.

For about 10 years, I've been using mostly Coates and Clark Trilobal polyester. It is not coated; I have never had a problem with fish eyes. I've gotten used to the way the polyester acts (less stretch) and like it much better than nylon. The best thing is that you can find it in local stores, and you can actually see the color, not just a picture on the internet.

Isn't the new Fuji thread polyester?

Absolutely correct as I believe Fuji's new thread is labeled as "Ultra Poly" which I am assuming is an upgraded Polyester.

I don't k now if it has been covered in a previous thread posting, but can we assume that the thread Fuji is selling does not have silicon or other additives intended for machine use? Maybe Jim I can weigh in on this subject.

Fuji® Ultra Poly™ Thread is specifically made for rod builders and is a unique polyester sourced exclusively for Fuji from a major worldwide manufacturer in Japan. We have "Ultra" and NOCP in size A & D. From all reports, it is very good thread and those using it seem to particularly like the way it burnishes and takes finish. Try a couple of spools and see what you think.
