Hi all,
I'm new to rod building (first one) and wondering if anyone has any recommendations for guide size/spacing for a 7'6" batson xp 904 spinning rod. Will be used mostly for Atlantic Bonito/False Albacore/Bluefish fishing. Casting distance is important. Will probably be used with 4000 size shimano reels and 20 lb braid. Also, do you think going up to a 1 ounce lure will be a problem? (rod is rated 1/4-3/4) Thanks! Re: Batson xp 904

There is a recipe for components and guide spacing on the Batson site, upper left. It will throw 1 0z., but there won't be as much life or snap in the cast as you may want. Re: Batson xp 904

I have the 8' version of that rod and it has quite a bit of tip power, I use it for casting 1/2 oz lures in the surf for 30"+ red drum and its perfect for it. It will cast 1 oz but the above statement about losing snap is true. Re: Batson xp 904

are those all mini guides? And where would i find them? I've never used mini guides before, any pluses or minuses? Thanks, I'm pretty new to this. I'm used to fishing G Loomis gl2 live bait rods mostly if that helps. I have a few in the 8-17 lb line range. Re: Batson xp 904

I would consider the tip Micro/mini but not the guides. Personally don't consider things Micro till I've gone to 4-mm or smaller Re: Batson xp 904

HEY BILL AT MIDWEST RODS! STOP YELLING! IF YOU READ MY ORIGINAL POST, YOU WOULD KNOW THAT I ALREADY HAVE THE BLANK! ALSO, YOUR POST DOES NOTHING TO ANSWER MY QUESTION, IT'S JUST A PLUG FOR YOUR WEBSITE! THANKS! Re: Batson xp 904

What I can say is that Bill has a first class act at Midwest Rod & Reel. He does much more then sell, he is a teacher and educator and will help you with your problem or situation. By contacting Bill he would help answer your questions about guides, spacing, reel seats and much more. I think you may have missed an opportunity here for some great help. Re: Batson xp 904

Ummmm,
Typing in all caps on a forum is universally recognized as the internet version of yelling. Has been for at least a decade. I don't doubt that Bill may be running a "first class act" or that he knows what he's talking about. The fact remains that it appears he didn't really read my post, as I already have the blank and he's telling me he has one. He also claims to have "all the components" when I never stated what components I was looking for. I was looking for suggestions, as clearly stated. Whether or not he knows his s#*t or runs a good business, etc, is neither here nor there. I'm now aware of his website, which was clearly the object of his post. Do you have any suggestions for my rod build? Or are you just posting to bust my chops? I know I'm new here, but I came looking for advice, not to be chastised. It might've gotten lost, but I meant my last post in playful way. Thanks. Re: Batson xp 904

Ezra
You may want to look at a blank that can handle 1 1/4 or higher lure weight if you plan to use 1 oz lure weight A tad more power You can also put any guide spacing chart - just static test and adjust the guides [anglersresource.net] Bill - willierods.com Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
