Hello fellow rod builders,
I have a problem applying ProKote Medium build to decals on my rod blanks. I am making water slide decals with my ink jet printer. After I make the decal I coat it with Krylon Acrylic to seal it up. I next apply the decal to the rod blank and then wait at least 24 hours before I apply Prokote. Some areas of the decal the ProKote will not adhere, it just runs away and leaves a void on the decal. This is usually one small area and the ProKote adheres fine to the rest of the decal. After the first coat of ProKote I can apply a second coat the the affected are and it will adhere the second time? Any ideas how I can fix this? Thanks, Mikew Re: ProKote will not stick to my decal?

Scuff the area with a 3m pad and you will be good to go. Re: ProKote will not stick to my decal?

It may be the Krylon that's the problem. Try coating the decal with regular color preserver and give that a go.

Mike is the spot where the coating runs away is it where you touch the label to apply it ? It could be oil from your skin in this area making the epoxy run away. Re: ProKote will not stick to my decal?

Mike,
I use Krylon Crystal Clear on my decals and have not had a problem with them not sticking to the blank. My procedure is to apply the decal directly to the blank, (without coating). I use a small wooden wall paper roller to firmly attached the decal to the blank without rubbing across the image on the decal. The wall paper roller get the decal placed down real well with smearing the image. I then apply two light coats of the Krylon Crystal Clear to the decal allowing about 10 minutes between coats to make sure the edges of the decal are sealed. I then proceed with wrapping the guides, which allows the Krylon plenty of drying time. I then coat the decal, hook keeper and guides using ProKote light build and have not have a problem. I have had just as much success coating the decals with color preserver, but I like the Krylon better due to he quick drying time. In addition to the other posts, I never touch the decal with my fingers. Rather, I only use a pair of tweezers to hold the decal and then rub it out with a tissue.

Sounds like oils from you touching it. IMO. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
