I am building a double handed surf rod 11'-12'. This rod will be used to fish for stripers and blues with overhead casting only. I will like to use k guides for this build what size of guides I need for this build.
(I was thinking 20,16,12 and running 8)
Thanks,
AL

Yes to the 20, 16, 12.

But when I see 8's I know you are going to use ceramics. Al - you will ruin the performance on any blank with the weight of ceramics. Stay with #5 REC Recoil snakes. I use a REC Recoil tip-top also. But that blank can handle a conventional fly rod tip-top.

If you don't like REC Recoils - go with Snakebrand #5's

The power of that blank can handle the slight bit of extra weight from modern lightweight ceramics. In fact, with one wrap versus two, plus the additional epoxy involved, you're apt to find that ceramics aren't adding that much additional weight.

starting with 20mm he is most likely using braid, I would not use recoils ceramics only

20, 16, 10 will space better I think. Also consider your line choice and weight. Heavier mono will fly better through a 25 than a 20. For those species I would go with the KW double foot as the reduction guides or at least a KW stripper.

This is a fly rod guys.

Using ceramics on that rod will reduce the grain window by 20 grains - with really no benefit other than maybe less friction fighting a fish. More important, I think, to get the best performance you can. And with a beach fly rod that means carrying maximum grains to bust through wind.

Al
If you can get your hands on the old discontinued TSVSG I would use 16, 12, 10.
If not - the TK should be 20,16,12.
Then snakes in #6 and 5's the rest of the way

You can do it with just 3 guide sizes, which will give you a straighter line path and at less weight.

It is a common misconception to believe that using every guide size results in a smoother or straighter line path, but the reverse is actually the case.

Tim,
Agreed - just easier to bend to convention.
