Hi Folks.
Have a problem that has reared it's ugly head, that of a stuck metal ferrule, that, has been fished in saltwater and not broken for what seems, many fishing seasons. Over a two week period, I have tried, the behind the knee's, over the head, soak in inox, soak in rusted on nut remover, heat, freezing with cigarette lighter gas, and boiling water. I am trying hard not to damage the ferrule, because it is very distinctive and would love to save it. Any last tips I can try, before grinding off, would be a big help. Regards, Rod. Mboro. Qld. Australia. Re: Stuck Ferrule

Generally metal stuck metal ferrules respond best to soaking/penetrating with a good rust dissolving product for several days. If that fails, you are probably left with having to either cut the ferrule off, or perhaps remove it from the butt section of the rod. If you can do the latter, then it can often be tapped out from that end.

If you are down to grinding off as your last chance you could try coating the outside of the ferule with vaseline and then soak it in coke or a similar cola drink.
Few days of that and the acid will eat most the rust. Re: Stuck Ferrule

A 50/50 mix of acetone and transmission fluid in a spray bottle has worked for me. ( but I have not used on a rod)

You know, I've heard of some auto mechanics using that. It's certainly worth a try.

Hello Rod.
When I still worked, we used Kroil Oil to loosen up tough corrosion on H46 helo's by spraying or soaking the rotor head Shaft while lifting the rest of the aircraft by the rotor head 10-15", the next morning the aircraft would be on the ground). Bob, New Bern, NC. Re: Stuck Ferrule

Robert has it right. Kroil is the best penetrating oil that I know of and always have some on hand. Re: Stuck Ferrule

How long is the rod? How important is it to take it apart?
If it has value as a part of a rod restoration, I would think long and hard before grinding it off. Re: Stuck Ferrule

STUCK RODS ?? 2 ways # 1 use little rubber on both rods [ stop slip age ] when pulling or twisting ]
# 2 you need 2 more people maybe , put one wrap masking tape on the male end next the to the ferrule need one pare of locking vice grips curved jars medium to small size , clamp the vice grip to the male end next to the furrow lock it but it has to move around an not touch the rod then clamp the rod to something that will not move, have #1 friend also hold it there, then # 2 friend pull on the other with a soft rubber jar opener on rod [ so it will not slip in there hand ] , then you hit the vice grip with a med to heavy . .. hammer the sudden jolt should jar it loose don't play with it, do it like you mean it, don't kill it but do hit it like you mean it good luck it works for me William Sidney AK Re: Stuck Ferrule

Hi Folks,
Thank you to everyone that took the time to respond to my post. One thing I love about this forum, is the wide scope and depth of knowledge in the replies. I can tell you I have tasted success, but how, I have no idea. Over a period of time, I tried so many tips, I could not honestly say exactly which one, or a combination of which ones, worked. I tend to think that penetration and vibration had, at least, sum part in it. Again, thank you to the many that replied. Regards, Rod. Mboro Qld. Australia. Re: Stuck Ferrule
