How does one ream the butt end of a split grip? Looking for tips on how this is done......can't stick a reamer thru it cause the end is solid.
Thanks, Robin Re: Butt grip

drill it out with the drill in reverse or use a round file. _______________________________ God Bless, Don Morse 800-516-1750 ext. 1207 / don@americantackle.us Rod Building..... It's What We Do. Re: Butt grip

yes... run it in reverse and it will not rip up on you. If you do have a little jagged edge your winding check will cover it up. _______________________________ God Bless, Don Morse 800-516-1750 ext. 1207 / don@americantackle.us Rod Building..... It's What We Do. Re: Butt grip

Just go right thru it with reamer.
Its just a piece of foam or cork so do with it as you want. Plug hole with cork plug from a hobby shop. You can buy packs of corks or wooden ones from 1/4 to 1 inch for around $1 to &2 per 50 from many hobby shops. You can get them in rubber and vinyl from hardware shops. You can get plastic plugs from most 'u assemble it' funiture sellers to cover the pre drilled holes they have in that chip board they sell as lumber. Or cut a tapered piece of dowling to size to fill hole and dip in plasti dip. You can taper a piece of dowling by cutting it to a few inches and chucking it in a drill then hit it with sand paper and trim to size. make molds from blue painters tape( has a release agent on its surface) and use left over excess epoxy over dead insects or small jewels and make something unique to plug hole with. Robin,
Perhaps an even better way to do it - if you don't want to drill all of the way through is with a round rotary rasp: [www.harborfreight.com] This is a very inexpensive set, but works very well for a lot of material removal. For example, if the size of the butt cap is such that the left most rasp will fit into it, it works very well, since there are no cutting edges on the top face of the rasp. This tool is ideal for filing out a butt cap, so that you enlarge the sides but not the top inside of the cap. All of the other rasps in the set work well for material removal for all shapes and sizes. Be safe Re: Butt grip

if you do drill all the way there are interior push on buttons that you can get from an auto store like Pep Boys They come in different sizes to fit different blank ends Bill - willierods.com Re: Butt grip

If the butt grip has a 1/4 inch hole "part" of the way, use a 1/4 bit to drill all the way through. Then use the spade bit from flex coat to bore out to proper diameter using the 1/4 hole as the guide for the bit. You will feel the bit "bottom out" against the rubberized cork (if you don't have the rubberized cork end, measure and tape the bit for depth). The hole will be centered nicely for the blank. Fill the 1/4 hole in the bottom of the grip with part number BRP8 from us. It is made for this purpose and gives a clean, finished look. Re: Butt grip
