Guys, a novice needs your advice. I was about finished wrapping my first rod and was about to put the finish on, when I decided I wasn't happy with my first wrap, so I cut everything off and decided to start over. Someone told me a razor is my friend.
My rod of choice is a 4'10" knife jig stick. It's short and parabolic. Initially I thought 6 guides plus the tip would be enough but after loading up the rod, I needed yet another guide to keep the line off the rod while under load. Again this is my first rod but I was indeed surprised at how many guides it needed, or at least I thought I needed. Given I'm going to start over, is there any negative to so many guides so close together? From the tip, I have guides at 3.25", 6.5", 10", 13.5", 17.25", 22.25" and 28.25". This is a casting rod. I'm open to any and all suggestions, comments or criticisms. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/10/2014 06:12AM by Tom Kirkman. Re: Guide Placement

If it needs one more guide, then it needs one more. When you start custom rod building you have to try and get certain notions out of your head, such as - "But this isn't what a rod is supposed to look like."
Add another and try it again. If it works for you, go with it. ......... Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
