Musky Rod Spinning rod

I have a request to build a Musky rod for a spinning reel. Has anyone else built one of these. The blank is a MU84MH MHX. I was going to go to a size 20 reel seat and 12" rear with a 5-6" forgrip.

My question is will the American tackle BTRLA Ring Lock A-Frame Spinning Guides be durable enough to handle Muskies? Would you single wrap or would you double wrap these guides? I always use a forhan locking wrap so that is a given.

Any other info would be great. Along with suggested guides if the BTRLA Ring Lock A-Frame Spinning Guides wont do.

Rolly,
I have always felt a double foot butt guide is necessary on this type of build.

Rolly,

I have a spinning rod build for muskies in my office right now. My grips lengths are pretty much exactly the same.

I would not use a single foot guide for the butt guide on a musky rod. What reel is going on this rod? On big spinning rods like this I typically use Fuji's K framed guides. On the rod I mentioned above, the guide train is BKWAG 30, 20, 16 followed by BLDBAG 6's to the tip. It was built for a 4000 size reel used with 50lb / 60lb braid.

X10 on the components that Jeremy uses. Great choices and they work well for such a rod.

In our part of the country, folks will commonly use 50-80 lb braid for the line of choice. No point to, and no need to, go smaller than a size 6 running guide.

With the wear and tear that happens to Musky rods in general, many folks will use only double footed guides for this application. Not necessarily needed for the line and fishing, but for the wear and tear on the rod itself as it is used for daily fishing.

With a double footed guide foot, no need or wish to use a locking wrap on the foot.

Be safe

The reel will be a 4000 series reel.

Just yesterday I have been asked to build a Musky rod on the same MHX blank only in a casting version. Not having built a Musky rod yet what choice of guides would would be recommended ?

Thanks
Tom
