Placing hook keeper

Just to make sure I have this correct. I'm going to place a hook keeper on a glossy finish rod for a friend. Do I rough up the area with scotch brite, wrap the hook keeper and then add the finish?

Not needed You can if you want makes no difference just make a snug wrap

Based on my experience in taking old guides off I would say the finish bonding to the blank and to the thread is very much a factor in keeping the guides/keepers in place. I think it is similar to plywood, the composite is much stronger than the sum of the strength of the components. I do not rough up any blanks before wrapping, but I make sure there is no contaminate on the surface. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
