Butt cap question

First time I am building a rod with a fighting butt cap and have a question I have a preformed cork butt cap and the opening is large compared to the end of the rod blank. I used some masking tape to fill up the gap. I know enough to insert something inside the blank to cause a blockage for the epoxy to fill.
Is there a better way? I have searched the files here and the internet. Thanks, Dave David Barrett Fontana, Wisconsin Re: Butt cap question

You might consider a section of brick foam or urethane arbor instead of the tape.

Fiberglass Drywall mesh will do a good job - better than masking tape, as you will get epoxy all the way between the blank and the buttcap... Re: Butt cap question

Hi Dave,
I may be misunderstanding you, so forgive me if I am. Do you mean one of the preformed cork butt caps, with the approx. 3/4" opening, that looks like a little shot glass? If this is what you have, I would glue up 4 or 5 cork rings, turn down one end to fit the preformed cap, then shape the rest of your fighting butt, ream to fit the rod butt, slide it on, glue in place, then glue your butt cap to the end on the cork you turned down.
