Tip Top advice

I’ve just brought a new tip top for a rod. One size was just to small, the other just to big. I’ve wrapped the tip so the larger one fits snug, with some hot melt adhesive. But now there’s to much of a step from the rod to the tip top.
How do I do a tapered wrap to reduce the step?
The other thing I would like to do is: On the tip top the brace is on the top of the tip, and I find my line sometimes gets snagged behind it. Is there some way I can smooth this out. On some tip tops the brace is on the underside, unfortunatly the match for my guides is on the top.

If you wrap up to your shim wrap and finish over it the finish should naturally "taper" out.

Use a fork, gently enlarge the tube of the too-small tip's tube. These tubes are brass and they will stretch if you take your time.

Peter,
As long as you have the rod tip in place, just put a layer of thread an inch or so down the rod from the tip top and then apply finish. It will look just fine.

Be safe

if the lip is still to much for you do a second layer, to fill the lip in an put flex coat on, did you mesure the tip with tip messure then do the same on the tip top is see what your problem is
it could be the tubes are not of the correct size or the blank is off work it out

Peter; I installed a Top with the braces welded on top of the tube, the rod came back with the reel full of tiny slivers of Mono. I will never again use a Top with the braces welded on top of the tube.

Maybe the flex coat would smooth out the step from the tip to the rod. Would it work to wrap from the back of the brace down onto the rod, before I apply the flex coat? Then maybe my braid won't snag on the brace.

Hi Jo.
Never understood why the brace is on the top, or should I say on the outside. Much better under the tip.
