Materials List-Do I have everything?

Okay this will be the first long rod I have built thus far, I have done 10-15 ice rods but never done a long rod so I want to make sure that I have everythign I am going to need before I place my order.

The rod is going to be a 7'3 ML Fast rod for throwing light jigs for walleyes. My goal with this rod is to make a very lightweight very sensitive rod.

Blank: 7'3 MHX ML F high mod blank
Guides: Fuji nano micro guide set with a size 4 micro ATC tip top
Reel Seat: Pac Bay Minima 12.5mm reel seat (not sure if the size is correct)
Grip: custom made grip from a friend of mine (need to come up with lengths for the pieces
Winding Checks: 1 13mm silver dimpled 2 14mm (not sure if the sizes are correct)

I am not sure if I have the right sizes for the reel seat and the winding checks, maybe you guys can help me with that. The butt measurement for the rod is .49 which by my calculations equates to 12mm roughly. I am making this a split grip rod and I plan on putting a tiger wrap in the split so that is going to increase the diameter which is why I went with 2 14mm for the split but is that going to be big enough? I am also planning on a decorative wrap as well so that is going to increase the diameter in front the the handle but again is 13mm going to be big enough on the winding check or should I go with 14mm there as well?

Tell the folks at Mudhole how far from the butt the reel seat will be.
I'm sure they will measure the blank and provide the proper size parts.
The same goes for winding checks.

I'm not sure on where the seat is going to be, without having the rod in hand and playing with it I'm not sure where it will balance out best. Any help or suggestions with that would be awesome

Scott,
Take any rod to find the location that you want the reel seat to be by holding it where it feels the most comfortable to you. Then you can go to MHX website and click on Resources and you will find a measurement chart that will give you the OD of the blank about every 2 inches up from the butt grip. You can then order your winding checks and Minnema reel seat accordingly. they have just about every one of their blanks on that chart. If not give them a call and they can help you out.

Don't forget a hook keeper, unless you already have one or don't want one.

That's part of the guide set.

Buzz,

Thanks for the advice

Put the reel seat at 13 inches from the butt and the rod should balance well.

But, to be sure, just tape the reel at that spot and put the butt cap on the rod temporarily and check the balance.

Be safe

Just curious Roger. Where did you come up with 13" ? On a 7'3" Ml walleye rod that would be pretty long. 9" would be about my max.

It might depend on how long your forearm is, or how you measure, but I like 14 inches from the butt to the front of a trimmed reel seat.

I agree there Garry.
Maybe we are saying the same thing. I assumed Roger meant 13" up to the bottom of the reel seat.

This is where we get into trouble when the full dimensions are not used . From Buttcapp to start of reel seat/ From butt cap to top edge of reel seat? What size of reel seat? 16/17/18

Good point!
My reel seats are all 16's...
I believe Roger was measuring to the center of the reel seat...
That would make his 13 inches about the same as my 14 inches.
