Hi everyone,
I am a new rod building enthusiast and match the typical demographics ( 60 yrs young) and would like to know how I might start a small business to pay for my hobby. Are there any pointers you can provide me? Any resources I should know about.?

Any and all information would be very appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

Begin by making sure your rod building skills are extremely competent. You cannot expect people to pay you for "pretty good." Your workmanship must be truly excellent.

Get involved in rod repair - this is the quickest way to meet potential custom rod customers. Advertise. Put your business name on your car windows, your hat, your boat, etc., and then, be seen.

Hi David, this was a question I asked a couple weeks ago. To see the responses I got, click the search and type in rodbuilding business. All the guys gave really helpful information, some even went into great detail. I think you will certainly find what your looking for from that post.

Welcome aboard.

Building on Tom's advertising comment - branding. Brand your business. Create a brand image and STICK TO IT.

Sometimes brands end up being more valuable than the product itself. There are great examples of this all over the sports fishing industry.

Remember at the end of the day every rod that leaves your shop is a business card. What it looks like speaks volumes. Even if you are going to use it for yourself; if someone else might see it, then it has to be clean and professional looking.

As Tom said, repairs are an excellent source of building a great customer base. The other most important thing I can say is advertise, advertise and advertise some more. The quality of your rods (as previously mentioned) is your best advertisement. Best of luck.
