I was thinkin about makin a wood handle for a flukin rod. im a big fan of old school stuff and want to replicate some of the handles I have collected. what kind of wood would be best? the lightest for flukin? I checker shotgun stocks too and make clam bats with checkering on them. is this practical? thanks

Yes, it's practical. Traditional boat rod handles have often been made from Hickory for its relative hardness.

I think checkering would be incredable on a grip, id like to see it when your done
I have been watching a frend ofmine that checkers fore years I think you have a great idea
checkering in strategic locations on the grip for specific hand contact points

the more I think about it I defiantly want to see a finished grip I just know it will be ausom..

I have also seen some older rods that used ash and oak. You can use all kinds of wood. a walnut with checkering would be nice

I've turned reel seat inserts out of curly hickory and like the look more than curly maple.

Actually a pole is what Festus on Gunsmoke used for catfish, while Doc Adams used a cane rod and reel. :>)
