Just a quick question about this, I don't like the outcome of using ht sponge brush applying this and an alterative is cheese cloth, which I have not found where I am. I figue any cloth that is not corse or will leave fuss shold work to put on a couple of coats. does this sound accurate? Re: application of permagloss or like product

Hi Douglas,
I find the sponge brush does really well for finishing foam core grips. Tom put an article in Rodmaker on how it's done and it works really well for me. Depends on what you are trying to do. Tom also had another article on how to coat complete blanks using a plumbing fitting and sponge insert. One thing that he was big on was to make sure you get enough liquid in the application tool so you can get it all done in one pass and I found that worked nicely. An ordinary brush is also ok for doing smaller stuff like guide wraps. Lot of conjecture on the use of and storage of moisture curing urethanes but I was a novice not long ago but still managed to get really good results. Tom is really good at the use of the stuff and will probably chime in so take note of anything he has got to offer and give it a try. ESFNEM Col Port Kembla, NSW Australia Edited 1 time(s). Hello Douglas & Col.
Col the articles you speak of are 1: Volume 13, Issue 3 Pg. 30("Carbon Skin Finishing") and 2: Volume 15, Issue 3 Pg. 22(Blank Coating Tool"). The first may or may not be the one you are thinking of but I think it is. Good Luck & Good Day. Bob, New Bern, NC. Re: application of permagloss or like product

What are you finishing - a rod blank or a grip of some sort?

I'm finishing a wood handle, It sounds like the problem is with me. I will mess with it on a scrap of wood, I also read Tom's artical so I should be OK.
Thanks for the responses. Re: application of permagloss or like product

Doug, In my experience using it on wood calls for a different technique than coating a rod blank. I use a brush and turn it on my dryer. Use caution in brushing too fast as bubbles can be a problem but they can be brushed out with gentle strokes. It takes at least 3 coats to get my desired look. I have used this method for literally dozens of wood grips that I have turned. It give a very tough finish. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
