Does CP go bad over time?

It's maybe a silly question, but my last two builds exhibit the same problem all of the sudden. I apply two soaking coats of CP, let it dry for 2-3 days, and finish with the TM lite epoxy. It's the same bottle of the U40 color preserver I have been using for the last year. As the finish cures I see dark spots develop usually next to the guide feet. Never had this problem before. Oh yeah, I have also used FishHawk thread in this last project. Coincidence? Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/29/2014 03:28PM by Roman Chamine. Re: Does CP go bad over time?

I expect you'll get some posts from real experts, but my experience is that U40 kept properly will last a lot longer than a year. I just finished a rod with some Dec 2012 U40 and Pro Wrap Evergreen and it looks great. I used it with dark blue Fishawk earlier and had no problem. Re: Does CP go bad over time?

Is it a dark color blank? If so it may be a thread packing issue. Freddwhy (Rapt-Ryte) Re: Does CP go bad over time?

Just a FYI I had two containers of tm cp shipped to the shop last week. They arrived in some of the below zero weather we have been having. They were hard as a rock and thick jell.. Now the distributor was very fast with a replacement and the new ones were liquid and right as rain. Just a cautionary note don't let water based cp freeze. Re: Does CP go bad over time?

If water based CP freezes, it will be unusable. Other than that, it's going to be subject to drying out over time as the water in the bottle tends to evaporate. You'll know when the stuff gets too thick to use, of course, by its consistency.

A bottle 1 year old and not used may have settled. About 1 hour before using, I would shake it vigorously, then let it sit. Invert the bottle and see if there is still sediment in the bottom. If there is shake it again. May not work, but is worth a try. Re: Does CP go bad over time?

I had one supplier tell me to stir rather than shake for mixing. I'm thinking you would entrap less bubbles by stirring is what he was trying to get at. Chester May your line be tight and your beverages be cold! Re: Does CP go bad over time?

Sounds more like cp did not get up in the guide foot tunnels. Re: Does CP go bad over time?

Yeah, this is the weirdest and the ugliest thing I have seen. The dark irregular spots seem to start at the guide feet and from there grow with no discernible pattern, so it doesn't look like a thread packing issue at all. I have no idea how this happened. The CP was kept in the house at around 70 degrees. Only, perhaps, once or twice it was left at the basement where the temperature never drops below 48-50 degrees. It was working w/o problems up until now. Re: Does CP go bad over time?

If this is a water based CP Try adding a few drops of water and mix Try it on some scrap wrapping
I also guess you shuck it well ?? Bill - willierods.com Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/30/2014 06:41AM by bill boettcher. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
