A true innovator in the rod building and rod component industry passed away this week - Ken Whiting. Most for you may not have known Ken, but he touched and pushed many innovations in the industry - from carrot fibers to nano tubes, Teflon coated guides, various plasma coatings, micro guides, tapered blanks/grips, to filament winding blanks and more. He will be missed for is "out of the box" thinking - ICAST Best of Show 3 years running speaks to that. The article below describes Ken better then we could:

In talking about Ken in the shop today - Todd Vivian reminded us that it was Ken who teamed up with Lamiglas and Todd in the mid 1990's to make the Lamiglas Ti-2000 Titanium blanks and rods. These features a hollow titanium tube for a butt section connected to a graphite blank tip section. Cool stuff - the feeling of a titanium butt section in the palm of your hand (cool metal feeling) made the blank feel supper sensitive. Ken bought the titanium tubes over from the golf shaft industry.
We also agreed, it was Ken's bight orange carrot sticks that kicked off the main stream acceptance of colored rods - Ducketts white, Skeet Reese yellow, Balir Wiggins blue, etc, may not have been if not for those bight orange carrot rods. Ken made the color of the rod a marketing aspect no one before had tired - and it worked. Regards. Hello Everyone!!!
I just found this forum and have been reading everything that everyone has had to say about my dad and I want to thank you all for everything you had to say. You all just knew a small part of my dad, you should have tried growing up with him. He truly was an amazing man!!! To me, it seemed everything he touched turned to gold. He raised us hunting and fishing and taught us a lot of valuable life lessons and I hope to pass everything he taught me onto my posterity. I see a lot of my dad in myself and when I sit back and think about it, I am proud to have had him as a father. I have reached out to Airrus in hopes of carrying on my dads legacy in the fishing industry but no such luck. I hope you all enjoy what my dad had brought to the industry as there will never be another Wizard. I love you dad and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of you and miss you!!! Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
