spiral wrap question

I have a couple light fluke rods that are spiral wrapped with a level wind reel. would it matter if I have a penn 4/0 w/o levelwind on a 7ft striper rod that is spiral wrapped? I don't mind moving line with my thumb but will it consistently stay on one side of the reel? Thanks

Not unless you adjust the butt and maybe one or two more guides to make it stay centered
take the rod outside Pull out line and put some thing heavy to it
retreve line and see if it does stack If so adjust guides

It may or may not. If you're spooling it with your thumb, then it really doesn't matter. How it lies will be up to your thumb.

w/o the levelwind The last heavy rod i did No levelwind i put the line going to the left of center So then i could push the line over to the right which is easier then pulling it to the left

Greg,
I use spirals for canyon tuna fishing without level wind reels. It's usually necessary to "thumb" the line onto the spool. However, I'm right handed so I spiral my guides to the left around the rod and keep the stripper just left of 12 o'clock when laying out the wrap. By doing this, the line does tend to favor the left side of the spool but, I find that it is easier to push the line with my thumb rather than have to push AND pull. I just push it to the right and let go then it works it's way back. I love my spirals!
