prepping roller, turbo,etc. guides

Is it necessary to prep these larger guides? I build only in shore rods, so I'm not familiar with these larger guides. I'M also wondering how many of you prep your guides, as it's not a job many people like. Thanks.

Sadly...I think you are more likely to need to prep those guides. It is darn near impossible to keep the finish from cracking but a shallow transistion seems to help. Personally, I like to wrap, coat, rewrap and recoat.

These large footed guides are probably the easiest to prep since you have a lot more to hold onto. Just take your time at the grinder and don't be in too much of a hurry. You can always take more off, but you can't put it back on!!

I feel they do need to be prepped. The smaller the thread you intend to over wrap the better this prep work must be to insure a smooth wrap of thread up the guide foot.
