I have made a 6 foot 5 - 6wt fly rod out of a batson e glass (durable )spinning rod blank and I have caught a lot of fish with it -- bass and bluegill in midwest river systems. I like the length because I flyfish from my kayak in rivers with tons of overhanging trees. I want to make a 7ft 10" one as an 8 wt. to cast weighted clousers and crayfish flies. Has anyone tried building a short 8 wt? Also, I just read from the library Tom Kirkman's static guide placement for spinning rods and it makes sense to apply it to fly rods. Thanks ahead of time for any input or suggestions. Re: 7 ft 10" 8wt flyrod and static guide placement

Static placement works extremely well on fly rods, I consider it a must! Re: 7 ft 10" 8wt flyrod and static guide placement

I order a lot of shorter blanks from CTS. Build some also. Static test a must as stated. A few inches off of a fly blank will quicken it up substantially compared to its sister 9'0" blank. Re: 7 ft 10" 8wt flyrod and static guide placement

Tom,
When the winds blow, and they almost always do during a Missouri winter, an 8' 8 weight is my favorite. I use my own progressive placement strategy and guide sizing for use with light tippets. Gene Moore Re: 7 ft 10" 8wt flyrod and static guide placement

My current favorite is the CTS Affinity-MX 8'9" #8. The MX blank is rated as med/fast . But rolled as an 8'9" blank it is blazingly fast with a very nice progressive action. I actually like it better than the faster Affinity-X in a 9'0" #8. I built one for one of the fly fishing world's greats and he likes it very much. I just want to echo what I was taught by these great people, static guide placement is always best. I use my meaurserments to get close and then I adjust them via static guide placement. Works really well for me. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
