Check out the Mud Hole rod building class schedule looks like the closest classes to you is Chicago and Minneapolis. Attending one of their classes is how I got started. Well worth your time.

If no one in your driving area gives lessons, ask at sporting goods stores, bait and tackle stores and marinas if they use someone for rod and reel repair. In addition to teaching a regular rodbuilding 101 class, I'll often take the time to help out a beginner..it's good for business.
