shikari buffs question

i have found a 2001 shikari blank catalog with a 2005 price list and alot of the shx blanks say new or redesigned. when did shikari re design their blanks and why?. my guess is the older ones were thicker walled, hence heavier as i've got my hands on some shx blanks that weigh more than i remember them.

i have a psj 702 shx blank that weighs 2.6 ounces which is shocking to me since i have always considered shikari shx blanks light weight and on par with gloomis imx'es.

I will weigh the finished P702 and the unfinished PP7000. I have some others a couple of SJ and SB blanks 6 foot and 6 foot 6 inches I will weigh also. In the modified CCS system I use the PP7000 comes in at 100 pennies and 80 degrees, The P702 is 120 pennies and 78 degrees. The other blanks are all 160 to 190 pennies and 74 to 76 degrees AA. I am thinking the P702 built up came in at under 3 Oz. I will recheck those numbers though. Lots of history and rumor about the shikari blanks and their mandrels. They are a favorite of mine but with the new technology their are some awesome blanks out their that would probably surpass the old Shikari stuff.

Robert, do a search right here and you will get lots of info. I had the good fortune to attend the very last Duck River gathering put on by Bob who is now at Mudhole. There were lots of builders and presenters there. I remember meeting Bill Stevens there and I thought that he told me Castaway had the mandrels and most of the stock. I then heard from somewhere that the mandrels were in Oklahoma somewhere, then I heard that Rogue had the mandrels and just last week I had heard that NFC had the mandrels and that blanks from those mandrels could be bought from Karen at Bingham, but I have not verified that. I will call her someday and find out as I was going to purchase some of the BHX blanks but could not find any in the power and length that I like on her site. Like I said earlier, unless someone does have those mandrels and builds them per the original recipie they are probably gone forever from what we were used to. Fortunately there are some blanks out there now that surpass or come close to what we liked about the Shikaris.

i am kind of disappointed no one else besides me and you wants to talk shikari lore. i guess its time to turn the page, let go and forget about them and enjoy my new nfc's and my phenix rods. but i do need a new ds rod, hmm terry have you ever had a shxi blank as i would like to build a 7000. here we go, absence makes the heart grow fonder i guess.
