Marbling Question

Okay, I've watched some videos on marbling. but I still have a question. What are people doing for the base coat of the marbling?

Say I want white as my base coat. is that wrapped with white thread? Or is it painted? I am talking the area just forward of the grip? That is the area I would like to marble on one of my rods?

Sorry if the question has been asked before. I couldnt find any previous discussion on that>

Thanks
Mike

Mike use whatever colour you want as the base and do it in thread. I always try and use a base colour which enhances the theme of the rod, usually metallic thread. The metallic threads look great shining through the pigments on top.

Thanks for the quick reply. one more question.

Are the marbling pigments special to rod building? or can I just go to my local craft store and get some?

An alternative to the usual petroleum based pigments that most use for marbling is to use latex craft store paints like the Folk Art metallics. A white coat of exterior latex house paint is suitable for a primer followed by a base color of choice which is sealed with a coat of thread finish then marbled and sealed again. The process is described in RodMaker magazine Volume 16 #3. [www.rodbuilding.org]

Mike you can use just about any pigment. Remember you only need a really small amount to tint the finish. You can also do a heap of different things with the Trelikes SAP to get different results.
