Short Wrapper Long Rod

Hello Gal's & Gents,
This hopefully is a stupid question and y'all have a quick remedy. I am currently replacing the guides on an 8' Star Rod. I have a forecast power wrapper with an 8' base (standard chuck). When mounted the tip of the rod is 8'' past the end of the wrapper. Aside from buying a track extension and new support what tricks are there for wrapping the tip and first guide. I used a bobbin for the underwrap but think it might not do the job for wrapping the first guide. I look forward to the feedback.

You can slide the track apart so it expands to the length you need while wrapping the tip, or even flip the rod around and let the butt protrude off the end while taking care of the tip and first guide now located near the headstock. Just do those by hand.

I keep my old hand wrapper around just for times like this. I have a rod support that extends to the floor so i can do whatever length I need.

Bobbins work fine. Go forth and wrap.

Maybe one of us should buy a 4' extension and saw it in half and share with a friend. =) I only need the extra length occasionally.

Remove the motor and position the blank so you can wrap the last few guides by hand (or turn the rod around if you don't mind wrapping in the other direction)

I bought a 4' section for mine. The base extrusions did not match up very well. The rod stands won't slide past the joint in the base. I am considering cutting it in half and mounting the chuck and motor on the half section.

Sometimes the best solution is also the easiest and most cost effective!

Do as Tom suggests
Then if the butt sags you can get a box cut a V in it and rest the butt on it Wrap enought tip guides till you can put it back on power

Whatever works

It is pretty simple.

Just take a board or old cutting board to make a base. (about 4X4 inches) Then, just take a solid piece of blank material - or a broom stick handle or a dowel and drill a hole in the base that will support the dowel or piece of rod stock.

Finally, cut the Dowel, when mounted in the base to be a touch taller than the height of the rod as it rests on the wrapper. Finally just cut a slot in the end of the dowel, that is a touch wider than the width of the rod tip that needs support and you are set.

Simply place the tip of the rod in the slot and wrap your guide as needed. Either use a bobbin, or just take a piece of thread in your hand and use your fingers to keep tension on the thread as you wrap.

Then, in the future, if you ever need to support the end of a rod as you are wrapping , you will have a nice inexpensive portable holder for your tip:

Be safe.

p.s.
Here is a picture of a similar holder that I made when I wrap very flimsy very fine tipped ice rods that work much better than a roller rest.

Not a problem with the fat end of the rod hanging in space. It's going to be beefy enough.

Thanks everyone for the help. Like Chuck says sometimes the best solution is the easiest. I never thought about turning the thing around, thanks Tom. How would you reinforce the tip (12.5) to fit in the chuck. wrap some tape and put a cork ring over it?
Thanks again for all of the replies. All great ideas.

I wouldn't chuck the tip. Just mount the rod and wrap the tip and first guide or two - turning the rod by hand.

In spite of the previous comments, I personally would not reverse the rod in the wrapper.

I think that there is just too much chance to damage the rod by doing this.

Be safe

Roger, this shouldn't be an issue. The bed on most of these wrappers is 8'. I always open the chuck and slide the rod butt away from the jaws while I apply Cork Seal. The first support is usually just beyond the stripper guide while wrapping. The bottom third of any blank is pretty stout, so no worries at all. Flipping the rod would be a wash.

The rod in question is a 8' Deluxe 30 Star Rod for Tarpon (actually gator snatching). it is plenty stout to handle a little cantilever on one end or the other. and there is only one underwrap and guide that requires the reverse installation.

Thanks again everyone for all of the input.
