Harbor freight has these small 3 inch chop saws on sale that work exceptionally well.
Remove the blade, and replace it with an abrasive cut off wheel.

I use an abrasive cut off wheel on a small saw like this all of the time around the shop to take care of any cutting duties.
Quick, easy, clean, and has a very thin Kerf - or very little material removed from the piece to be cut.

Mark the rod where you want to cut with tape Take a fine tooth saw blade and as you turn the rod cut it and then just keep going
After cutting it sand the cut with a fine sandpaper

No Big Deal

William,
Of course a dremel tool will work very well.

It is just that if you use a mini chop saw for a lot of different things, the mini chop saw is more convenient and faster than a dremel tool.

Take the blank to an archery shop and have them cut it with their arrow saw. They shouldn't charge more than a buck to do this.

Agree,
An archery arrow saw is virtually identical to the mini chop saw with an abrasive cut off wheel.

Basically an arrow saw is a 6000 rpm motor with an abrasive wheel bolted to the output shaft and a carriage to hold the arrow - or blank, if cutting a blank.

Hello All.

I'm with Roger on this you can use the saw for a lot of things around the house and cuts straight without even having to mark, tape, cut and sand, I just mark and cut.

For $28.00 it's a good investment in tooling, however if you cannot afford the mini chop saw do it Bill's way.

Tight Wraps.

By the way, since this mini chop saw is so small and light and has a tendency to warnder unless it is clamped down, I preferred to mount the mini chop saw to a 2X6 block of wood.
I put 4 rubber feet on the block of wood, to prevent wandering and the size of the block is adequate to prevent any moving of the mini chop saw when used.

By the way, p.s. - since I intended to only make 90 degree cuts, I removed all forms of table or adjustments from the base of the mini chop saw after receiving it.
I then took a piece of 1/4 inch x 1/4 inch aluminum angle, and used the angle to form a square back stop for cutting. I simply placed the aluminum angle at 90 degrees to the blade, and placed it so that the back stop was at the exact center of the blade.
After mounting it to the base of the saw, I just turned on the saw and made one pass down through the angle to give the necessary blade kerf clearance.
Simple, straight, 90 degrees to the blade, no adjustment and also takes the minimum amount of space for a good solid and square cut on the blank being chopped.

Tape the spot you are cutting and use a hacksaw. If the cut is out of sqare, it's easy to sand to square with 120 grit, then 300 to finish.
